Course Overview

The Classical era in Greece was a time of profound change.  While philosophers advanced theories regarding the creation of the universe and the gods’ role in that process, scientists like Aristotle pondered the nature of matter.  At the same time, playwrights commented on the actions of politicians and the theories of philosophers in dramas and comedies, gifting the modern world with plays that continue to provoke contemplation and appreciation.  In this lecture, we’ll examine these different aspects of the Classical Greek world and discuss how innovations in philosophy, science, and the theater were received by the Greek population at large.
