Course Overview

From the ancient theories of Galen, and the healing myths of Asclepius to the practices of barber-surgeons, we'll trace the remarkable evolution of surgery. We'll explore pivotal turning points, including the tragic case of James A. Garfield, whose death from sepsis underscored the dangers of infection, and innovations by pioneers like William Halsted and Harvey Cushing. We'll discuss modern advances such as laparoscopy and robotic surgery. Participants will gain a deeper appreciation of how surgical practices evolved and leave with insight into the science, risks, and breakthroughs that shape medicine today.
