Course Overview

We’ll continue our discussion of the civil rights movement from where the previous OLLI class left off, focusing on events from 1964 to 1973. Topics include Freedom Summer, the Selma to Montgomery March, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the March Against Fear, Mississippi’s 1967 elections, and school desegregation in 1970. Drawing on the instructor’s experience as a civil rights worker and lawyer in Mississippi during these years, the course offers both historical context and personal insight. Together, we will explore two central questions: What was the struggle all about and to what degree was it successful?
