Course Overview

This discussion-oriented course invites students to discover or revisit John Milton and his epic poem Paradise Lost, focusing on its structure, style and Milton’s broader intellectual and artistic aims. Key conversations will focus on the portrayals of Satan, Adam, and Eve, questions of heroism and villainy, and the political and gender dynamics at play throughout the work. We will analyze Milton’s use of epic conventions and his departures from traditional narratives, including his reimagining of the creation story. We will examine the poem’s philosophical and cultural influences ranging from legal to scientific thought, and consider how Paradise Lost reflects, critiques, and reframes contemporary debates about free will, governance, and the human condition.

We will use the online text of Paradise Lost located at the Dartmouth John Milton Reading Room website, which includes annotated links to explanations of unfamiliar terms and phrases.
