Course Overview

The question of “What is the American Project?” feels more urgent than ever. The Constitution’s preamble speaks of “a more perfect union,” and Lincoln envisioned “a government of, by, and for the people,” rooted in equality. Yet today, that vision collides with efforts to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs nationwide. Some political leaders are promoting “ethno-nationalism” as an alternative, raising critical questions: Can the American Project survive without DEI? Is “ethno-nationalism” a legitimate 21st-century doctrine, or simply a rebranded form of white male supremacy? This class examines these competing visions and their profound consequences for America’s democratic future.
