Course Overview

Antisemitism is real and dangerous, but how we define it shapes both public policy and community life. This session examines two competing definitions: the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition, which can conflate criticism of Israel with antisemitism, and the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism (JDA), which seeks to distinguish between the two. We will explore how these frameworks affect teaching, hiring, and free expression, and what’s at stake for Jewish and non-Jewish communities alike. Students will leave with a clearer understanding of both definitions, their controversies, and how they shape debates about antisemitism today.
