Course Overview

Upon the death of Elizabeth I of England in 1603, her cousin James VI of Scotland became James I of England. A unification of the English and Scottish crowns followed, ending centuries of periodic warfare between the two countries. But a century later, following an official Act of Union that dissolved Scotland’s independent Parliament, Scottish rebels sought to separate their kingdom from England by throwing their support behind the descendants of James II, who had been deposed after his conversion to Catholicism. James’s supporters were known as Jacobites, and they fomented two major rebellions in 1715 and 1745, both of which failed. In this class, we’ll examine the birth of the Jacobite cause, the revolts, and what happened after the failure of the ’45, when Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Scottish supporters were defeated on the battlefield at Culloden Moor.
