Course Overview

In April of 1916, Irish rebels seized the post office in Dublin and held it for several days as a protest against British control of Ireland. The Easter Rising was a response to several centuries of British colonization of Ireland and the suppression of Irish political authority, language, and culture. While the Easter Rising failed to free Ireland of British control in the short term, it did force British political leaders to engage in discussions about decolonization, which ultimately led to the Republic of Ireland (as opposed to Northern Ireland) becoming completely independent of the United Kingdom in 1949. In this class, we’ll examine the circumstances that led to the Easter Rising, the political evolution of Ireland after the events of 1916, and where Ireland stands today in its relationship to the United Kingdom.
