Join us for an exploration of women, sports, and politics as we analyze the 2024 Paris Olympics through a personal lens. My mother was an avid sports fan, and her life experiences reinforced the lesson that “the personal is political.” I was her primary caregiver for fourteen years, and although she passed away in April 2023, I know how she would have viewed the 2024 Paris Olympics—who her favorite athletes were and how their political contexts would have enhanced their appeal for her. We’ll discuss and watch videos of performances by athletes like Simone Biles, Brittany Griner, Sabrina Ionescu, Gabby Thomas, and Stephen Curry, exploring their impact both in sports and in the political landscape. We’ll examine how their achievements resonate beyond sports and influence the political landscape.
