Course Overview

The current debates about ‘imposters’ and ‘cultural appropriation’ raise intriguing questions about public representations of one’s personal and group identity particularly in the academic, political, and creative arenas. The debates reveal demands for ‘authenticity’ and at the same time endorse an individual’s right to change their cultural, ethnic, racial, or gender identity. We will examine the rise to prominence and public notoriety of individuals such as Grey Owl, Forrest Carter, Ngozi Fulani, Rachel Dolezal, Jessica Krug, George Santos and others, and discuss the reasons behind this phenomenon and its effects.
