Course Overview

Sophocles’ play Antigone is part of the trilogy about Oedipus, the doomed king of Thebes.  Antigone takes place after Oedipus’ abdication and focuses on the conflict between Oedipus’s sons and the new king.  Antigone, Oedipus’ daughter, is forced to choose between loyalty to her family or to Thebes itself.  But in fact, the character’s plight reflected actual changes that were taking place in ancient Greece, where the state was beginning to eclipse the power of kin groups.  This class will examine the play and what it tells us about the evolution of the state in ancient Greece.
