Course Overview

Beowulf is a medieval poem with a fascinating history. Modern scholars who have studied the poem have come up with various arguments for when it was originally composed and whether the characters described in the poem were historical figures or are merely fictional characters. What is undisputed is that the poem tells us about the values of early medieval Germanic society and just how complex and violent political alliances of the time could be. This class will focus on the history of the manuscript and what it reveals about this little-known era of northern European history.
