Course Overview

In seventeenth century New Spain, a young woman charmed the court of the viceroy with her intellect, and chose the life of a nun rather than marriage so that she could pursue her deep desire for learning. In her cell in the convent she wrote poetry, plays, essays, and carols with such skill that scholars today regard her as one of the finest poets of the Spanish language. In this course we’ll learn about convent life in Baroque New Spain, meet Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, explore some of her poetry and other works, and see why she is one of the most famous women in Mexican history.
