Course Overview

Shakespeare wrote plays to be seen, not read! But reading and understanding the plays before seeing them greatly enhances the play-going experience. This class will focus on the play's plot, characters and themes through text-based discussions & DVD viewings; we will hear guest speakers from the New Mexico Shakespeare Festival. Please bring a text of the play to class, any edition.

Julius Caesar, one of Shakespeare's most recognized tragedies, will be performed at the New Mexico Shakespeare Festival in Albuquerque this summer. Seeing the play performed is to experience it as Shakespeare intended, but reading and understanding the play before seeing it greatly enhances the play-going experience. This class will focus on the play's plot, characters and themes through textural, literary, historical and theatrical contexts. Guest speakers and actors from the Festival will provide further insight to their production of the play.

The Winter's Tale, one of Shakespeare's late "romances" pairing themes of familial and emotional drama with rebirth and reunification, will be performed at the New Mexico Shakespeare Festival in Albuquerque this summer.
