Course Overview

Picture it… New York City, 1957. It’s love at first sight when Tony meets Maria at a high school dance. Their romance helps to fuel conflict between rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks in West Side Story, an iconic reboot of Romeo and Juliet. In 2021 legendary film director Steven Spielberg and screenwriter Tony Kushner presented their film version of West Side Story. How does it compare to original 1961 version directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, which many consider the best musical ever filmed? How do both versions fare from a Latino point of view? Clips from both films will be viewed discussed and evaluated.
