Course Overview

We’ll focus on Aristotle's understanding of public discourse in the Rhetoric and the elements of a good speech. Also this course will focus on the Poetics, Aristotle's analysis of Greek tragedy and the tragic flaw that leads to one's downfall. We will consider the poetry of Homer, speeches of Pericles and the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. The influence of these two works was immense, both in the realm of public discourse as well in the theater and cinema.
