Course Overview

George R. R. Martin, author of Game of Thrones, said “A reader lives a thousand lives. The man who never reads lives one.” Books transport us through time to myriad locales, societies, events, and even fantasies. The Bible is the most published book in the world yet few know the history of its title. The first known novel? Written in the 11th c. by a woman in Japan. Why did Charles Dickens create the cliff hanger? Would The Great Gatsby have been as effective with its original title – Trimalchio in West Egg? How did Bubonic Plague result in machine-printed books? And how did World War II jumpstart the paperback industry?
