19883 - Mystics, Saints and Sages

Course Overview

This series introduces students to four different Mystics, Saints and Sages: 1) Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama (1935-present). 2) Mother Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1997). 3) Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (1918-2008). 4) Mythologist and academic celebrity Joseph Campbell (1904-1987). We'll study and discuss the life and teachings of each figure, his/her place in history, and later impact on the world. Because this is a course in religious studies, philosophy and spirituality, a diverse range of ideas, understandings and responses to the materials are encouraged. Each week includes teachings, class discussions, a documentary, Q and A, recommended readings, and optional homework.
