Course Overview

In earth-honoring cultures, people venerated trees, stones, rivers, mountains, and other natural sources. They knew that the Earth is alive, and that everything in Nature is alive. People believed that these sacred places were the homes of their spirits and deities. Sacred sites emerge when humans recognize “inspirited” locations in the landscape. Human-made places can also be sacred, such as Neolithic earthworks and stone circles, as well as medieval cathedrals and holy wells. We'll explore connections between sacred places and pilgrimages, miracles, holy objects, and places of venerating ancestors. “Once a sacred space, always a sacred space.”
