Course Overview

This year marks the 100th  anniversary of the passage of the June 2, 1924 Indian Citizenship Act.  The Act was the culmination of the previous 300 years of changing relationship between colonial and federal powers and tribal Nations. We will examine the evolution of the concept of aboriginal citizenship, why the Pueblos of New Mexico acquired citizenship to their peril a hundred years earlier, what real estate had to do with it, and why the Citizenship Act’s provisions were not fully implemented until the 1950s.
