Course Overview

Four common items on a grocery list or in a kitchen cupboard. Hardly worth notice unless you are hiding the chocolate from your kids. But what you have is four of the greatest game changers in history. Salt or “salarium” was so important that Roman soldiers were partly paid in salt. A “sal dare” or soldier received a “salarium” or salary. Pepper was so rare that even today the Dutch refer to luxury items as “pepper expensive.” Bostonians threw tea in the harbor, but it was coffee that jumpstarted the American Revolution. How did Cortes use chocolate to defeat the Aztecs? Discover the history lurking in your pantry.
