Course Overview

2020 marked the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment which guarantees American women the constitutional right to vote. The American suffrage movement built on the movement in England where in 1866 1,500 signatures on a petition were presented to Parliament requesting female suffrage. In both countries, women were imprisoned, forced fed, and blasted with fire hoses to try to force them back into their “natural” realm – the home. Today, women’s journey for equality is still a struggle both in the United States and around the world. This class will examine that journey and introduce you to the some of the resilient women who have – and still are – moving women forward.
