Course Overview

Carthage was founded in Tunis, North Africa, around 800 BCE as a Phoenician port city. While other Phoenician cities were repeatedly conquered and subjugated, Carthage prospered, expanding to become one of the great powers of the western Mediterranean. The Carthaginians became great seafarers, traders, and colonizers. They capitalized on the trade of Iberian silver and British tin. Carthaginian settlements spread across the North African coast, into much of Spain and the Portuguese Atlantic coast. Carthage was a maritime power and its expansion brought direct confrontation with the newly rising power of Rome. We’ll watch a film and discuss which New Mexico families show the DNA markers that are most identified with this ancient civilization
