Course Overview

We'll examine Plato's Dialogue Symposium, which is the account of a dinner party in honor of a poet, Agathon, receiving an award for one of his plays. The dinner party is held at Agathon's house, and is attended by several of his friends, and especially Socrates. Instead of drinking and being entertained, they decide to go around the room having each in turn give a speech on the topic of Love. What follows is a good overview of several paeans to Love, culminating in Socrates' speech. This dialogue offers much for reflection on the topic of Love, which has become quite popular over the last few generations, if not quite taken-for-granted. We will read from the actual dialogue Symposium. Inexpensive copies can be had at AbeBooks.com and at Amazon.com.
