Course Overview
In 313 CE, Christianity was declared to be a tolerated religion in the Roman Empire. From that point onward, Christianity (strictly speaking, Catholicism) became the dominant religion in the empire and, later, in medieval Europe as well. But even before it became a tolerated religion, there were different interpretations of Christian theology that were regarded as heresies by representatives of the official church. Heresies and those who espoused them—heretics—were reviled and condemned from the 2nd century CE onward. This class will examine both heresies and policies toward heretics during the first thousand years of Christian history.Loading...
