Course Overview

Join us for a structured introduction to observational astronomy. You'll learn to identify key constellations, bright stars, and planetary positions using virtual tools and star maps. Topics include the celestial sphere, the apparent motion of celestial bodies, lunar phases, and how to track astronomical events such as meteor showers and eclipses. We'll explore free software and mobile apps that simulate the night sky and help plan observations from any location.

You'll come away with both a practical and conceptual understanding of the night sky—empowered to recognize celestial patterns and navigate the stars with ease. No telescope or prior astronomy experience required—just a sense of curiosity and a desire to better understand the sky above.

What You'll Learn

  • Identify major constellations and bright stars visible in the night sky during different seasons
  • Explain the apparent motions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars using the celestial sphere model
  • Use star charts, planispheres, and astronomy software/apps to locate and track celestial objects
  • Describe the phases of the Moon and understand their relation to lunar and solar calendars
  • Predict and interpret key astronomical events, including conjunctions, eclipses, and meteor showers
  • Understand basic astronomical terminology, such as right ascension, declination, magnitude, and asterism
  • Develop observation plans tailored to their geographic location and time of year, using digital tools

Who Should Attend

No prior experience in astronomy is required - just a sense of curiosity and a desire to better understand the sky above.
