Course Overview

A phenomenon swept the British Isles in the late 1960s and early 70s, which came to be known as the British folk rock movement. Leading the charge were the group Fairport Convention, who first came together in 1967. Their fourth album, Liege & Lief released in 1969, is now regarded as a classic in the genre; the album featured vocalist Sandy Denny (1947-78), whose vocal talent and song writing was crucial to the group’s sound. The mainstream media has increasingly recognized Fairport Convention’s historical importance; they received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002, at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
