Course Overview
Most of us have a story to tell, if only we knew how to begin. What are the core elements of successful creative writing and how do you find your story and your voice? Good writing is a skill and may be taught. We’ll practice various forms of fiction writing while learning about plot and character development, writing structure and the importance of setting. This class will provide the tools for you to develop a single story or several intertwined stories. The creative license is yours. Participation and willingness to write is required. Sharing your work is optional.
What You'll Learn
- Students will learn the core elements of successful fiction writing: character writing, setting writing, and, most of all, plot development
- Students will learn 7 different forms of fiction writing with an emphasis on the structure of writing and plot development
- Students with learn and practice the 7 story structures: Plot Arc, Freytag’s Triangle, The Hero’s Journey, Fichtean Curve, In Medias Res, Seven Point Story Structure, and Save the Cat
- Through this practice, students will walk away from the course with either 7 completely different stories or 7 intertwined stories, depending on their own creative license
- Students will learn the elements of fiction writing and the exploration of form necessary to begin their own creative writing process

• Beginning fiction writers looking to hone their skills as creative writers and thinkers• Beginning writers that want the core building blocks of fiction, as well as new and creative ways of story writing
• Beginning writers interested in the different potential processes of creative writing
