The mysterious Silk Road! Remote Mongolia! Merchants carried more than silk to Europe: also jade, porcelain, tea, spices, and gunpowder. It never was a road but a series of perilous caravan routes roaming through Kazakhstan to Turkey and Europe. Then came Genghis Khan and offspring (1206-1368), who organized Mongol tribal horsemen to conquer and ride west as far as Hungary. They created Pax Mongolica that provided amazing trade-route security, enabling Marco Polo to travel east in 1271 CE. Who else went back and forth from Europe to Asia?
