Course Overview

Since words became written, across cultures and centuries, they and their authors were attacked, censored, banned and burned for religious, political and moral reasons. This overview will discuss the penchant for controlling ideas as acts of censorship and acts of protest from the burning of Bibles in the 15th century, to the Index of Prohibited Books (1559-1966), to burning Harry Potter books in Alamogordo in 2001, to banning romance novels in schools in 2024, and the current subject-matter bans by the government and the mass media.
