Course Overview

This course frames the nature of addiction counseling on day one with an introduction to the continuum of substance use disorders (SUD) through historical models of the causes of substance abuse and the transtheoretical model progression into and out of substance abuse. On day two, apply ethical decision making strategies to navigate the special ethical dilemmas as defined by NAADAC's code of ethics, compared with other professional ethical standards. Discuss the professional issues of confidentiality, documentation, the law, mandatory notification and reporting requirements. Know the responsibilities and protections in legal matters when interacting with the courts, probation and parole. Study the causes and social costs and consequences in populations with gender and racial/ethnic differences to comprehend the epidemic proportions of substance use disorder nationally and in New Mexico. NAADAC approved for 16 professional training hours.

  • Those interested Substance Abuse Counseling
  • Those who want to become licensed Addiction Counselors (LSAA or LADAC)
  • Currently licensed counselors or those working in the behavioral health field who want additional training or are in need of license renewal hours

Additional Information

Student will need to attend both days and take course exam on last day and pass with 70% or above to receive course certificate.
