Course Overview

American Square Dancing has its roots in various types of European country dancing and became popular in the early part of the twentieth century. The United States has officially adopted Square Dancing as the National Folk Dance. Duke City Square Dance Club is the largest club in New Mexico and has been teaching people of all ages to square dance for decades. By the end of the lessons, you’ll have learned the 54 calls (square dance steps) in the Social Square Dance level. According to a recent NIH study through Stanford University, square dancing is not only a great way to get moving and meet people, it enhances cognitive function at all stages in the life cycle. The kinesthetic, rational, musical and emotional functions of dancing, “thinking on your feet” improves neural conductivity and leads to better health for body and brain!

No partner is necessary and square dancing is accessible to all ages and activity levels.
