2225 - Abstract Drawing and Painting

Course Overview

This class is based on abstract ideas and the development of abstract practice in the studio.

Both painting and drawing instruction will be offered, and you will have the option of selecting one or both depending on interest and experience. There is no stylistic expectation. The infinite potential of abstraction is scary but fun and can develop into a personal visual shorthand that navigates the past, the present and the future.

Homework is assigned that was to be done on paper in mixed media.

Classroom studio work could be done with painting materials (acrylic or oil paint) or continue with works on paper.

Weekly critiques will also be a regular component of the class as will be casual discussions about contemporary art.

Materials List 

• 24” x 18” Sketch Pad (or any large format, inexpensive newsprint drawing pad)
• 1 similar sized multipurpose drawing pad with heavier paper
• 4b-8b pencils
• Vine/compressed charcoal
• Black dense charcoal (black pastel could be used)
• 2b pencils
• Gum eraser
• Kneaded eraser
• White studio eraser
• Glue
• Scissors
• Collage material (assorted colored paper/fabric etc.)

Paint

• Acrylic OR oil paints:
• cadmium red medium
• alizarine crimson
• ultramarine blue
• cobalt blue
• viridian green
• sap green
• Hansa(or lemon)yellow
• burnt sienna(brown)
• titanium white
• An assortment of sizes in brushes but be sure to include some medium and smaller sized soft bristle, square brushes.

For oil; either sable, martin or squirrel hair, or for both multi-use synthetic; multi-use synthetic brushes are the best buy as they are sturdy and cheap and useable for both oil and acrylic painters)

• A few different sized palette knives
• Non odorous solvent (Gamsol is the best) for oil only.
• Disposable paper palettes... the largest size is best
• Cotton rags and or paper towels
• A few closable, containers for solvent (oil only) which must be taken with you at the end of class OR containers for water (for acrylic).
• Two or three canvas boards (please, NO canvas pads, they are useless) OR two or three stretched canvas.........no smaller than 20"something by 16"-18"something...the bigger the better.
• In terms of colors, brushes, collage material etc....this list represents the bare bones of supplies......if you have more, feel free to bring it.

For the first class, you only need to bring drawing pads, pencils, charcoal and erasers.
