Course Overview

We will examine the text, context and impact of the songs of Irving Berlin, Paul Simon and Carole King. “God Bless America,” “Mrs. Robinson” and “I Feel the Earth Move” were seminal works and provided a soundtrack for generations. To be discussed more briefly will be “Blue Skies,” ‘White Christmas,” “For Emily When I may Find Her,” “Scarborough Fair,” “Graceland,” and its controversies.  This is intellectual history – influences, context, creation, impact, and legacies.  This discussion will highlight the central role of Jewish American musicians and songwriters in the creation of the 20th century American Songbook.
