Course Overview

Some classic Mexican love songs will be examined with English translations available and commentary on their origins, presentation and impact.  Many songs were eventually sung in English by American stars like Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. Some songs, in their writing or presentations, reflect feminist and post-modern perspectives. Songs include: Dos Arbolitos, Bésame Mucho, Deja Que Salga La Luna, Cuando Vivas Conmigo, Tú Sí Sabes Quererme, Cariñito, Sabor a mí, Tu Cárcel, Tu Recuerdo y Yo, Historia de Un Amor. Artists include: Linda Ronstadt, Luis Aguilar, Pedro Infante, Jose Alfredo Jiménez, Lila Downs, Consuelo Velasquez, and Natalia Laflorcade. Join us on Mexican Independence Day for a celebration of Mexican songwriting.
