Course Overview

American Folk Music has roots in Europe, Africa, South and Central America, and in Native American traditions. The instructor will provide information about these roots and then will provide lyrics and chord sheets. We will sing these songs in a group setting. Participants are encouraged to bring their instruments. We’ll examine sources of music from the British Isles, particularly Ireland and Scotland. Early settlers in Appalachia kept many of the songs that came across the sea and adapted them to their settings and experiences. This resulted in unique song forms and expression that are now an integral part of folk and country music.
