Course Overview

When Henry VII defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth on August 22, 1485, the War of the Roses in England ended its 30 years of brutality and carnage. During this conflict, medieval castles provided shelter and security for whole villages seeking protection inside 16-foot walls. Henry VII could not have known that he would be the last king to claim the throne of England in battle. He and his successors would rule with an absolute control of the country that brooked no opposition but brought stability to England. Castles were no longer necessary. They became stately homes designed to impress rather than repress. In towns, homes also began to change. This is the beginning of the homes we know today with all the characteristics that we associate with our homes: glass windows, bathrooms, specialized furniture, and lawns and gardens for decoration rather than protection and food production.

Join us for the next chapter in the development of the modern home. This is part of the series entitled “If Walls Could Talk.”
