Course Overview

Although the era of Western cattle drives to railheads such as Kansas City only lasted for twenty years, those twenty years are the source of huge folklore in American history. The cowpunchers and trail bosses, the rustlers and sheriffs, the card sharks and saloon girls that inhabit this era live today in books and in movies. Join us on an epic and arduous trail drive during which Indians, lightning, and stampedes can be common, and where young boys become men - on the plains and in the saloons of Kansas City. Meet larger-than-life figures such as Charles Goodnight, the inventor of the chuck wagon, and his partner Oliver Loving whose Goodnight-Loving Trail ran from southern New Mexico to Colorado. And finally, answer that oft-asked question. Were Miss Kitty and Marshall Dillon romantically involved?
