Course Overview

How did Homo Sapiens evolve to create culture, language, technology and advanced societies? Using food and diet as an organizing principle this survey lecture covers 8 million years of evolution from forest dwelling primates in Central Africa to the globe spanning Homo Sapiens. Using a food revolutions model from upright primates, to the use of fire, tools and hunting, to becoming omnivorous, to self-domestication, to domestication of animals and plants, to civilization, to globalization, to industrialization and finally to our current epoch, an explanatory through line sheds light on how we've become what we are.
