Course Overview

Medieval social customs and laws restricted women’s political power, but the realities of medieval politics often required that women act when their husbands, sons, or grandsons could not. Eleanor of Aquitaine preserved Richard I’s claim to the English throne against his usurping younger brother, John (both of them her sons). Similarly, Blanche of Castile served as regent for her son Louis IX of France when he went on crusade. These are just two examples of women who exercised political power in a time when they were weren’t supposed to. This class will discuss these two queens and others like them.
