Course Overview

Native American goods made for trade are often viewed as less authentic or less desirable compared to those made for personal use by the community. In the late 19th and early 20th Century, there were runs on Native American made goods which were considered authentic, even some ceremonial goods, as well as those made for trade. The railroads and increasing travel changed the landscape and Native American artists began to gain a large percent of their yearly income by catering to the tourist trade. In this lecture we will go into what tourists wanted and the impacts of this on the Native American trade as well as the outcomes in current collecting and practice.
