Course Overview

We’ll discuss prominent regions and artistic movements among the Native American peoples of North America. We will start with pre-history and follow it through the contemporary by geographic location. We’ll start with a general prehistory of Native America art to include prehistoric art as well as a brief discussion on the prevalence of Native American art and materials. We'll discuss Native American art by geographic location and highlight the styles and materials for each region so that students can see a progression in the styles and new introductions of materials. Students will take away an overview and hopefully a broader understanding of Native American art history.
