Course Overview

After the devastating fire of 2019, Notre Dame Cathedral is set to reopen its doors in December 2024. Why is Notre Dame so important to France and to world heritage? What are its origins, and what artistic and cultural roles has it played during its 800-year existence? How did Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame save the Cathedral in the 19th century? And finally, how was the Cathedral reconstructed, and to what extent do the controversies following the fire in Notre Dame help to determine its future? Professor Cathy Yandell invites you to join her in examining these fascinating questions.
