Course Overview

Zeno of Citium founded Stoicism in Athens around 300 BCE when he established a school in a public space named the Stoa Poikile (painted porch). His philosophy stressed personal virtue, self-control, emotional resilience and the interconnectedness of all things. Others known as Stoics include Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus, Cleanthes, Chrysippus, and Seneca the Younger. Contemporary cognitive psychotherapy has its roots in Stoicism. We will sample the writings of these Stoic philosophers to see how they may address our times.
