Course Overview

In the late 11th century, Emperor Henry IV of Germany and Pope Gregory VII came into conflict over the question of which of them was God’s representative on earth, each man claiming that title for himself. The conflict led them to lash out at each other, with Gregory excommunicating Henry and Henry sending military forces against Gregory. But the conflict had roots that predated their respective reigns, and there was no resolution until years after their deaths. In this class, we’ll examine the causes of the conflict, how it unfolded, and what its resolution meant for Europe as a whole.
