Course Overview

The history of the US can be viewed through periods of profound political change. The American Revolution established independence from Great Britain and launched a new democratic experiment grounded in the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence. A second transformative era was the American Civil War and Reconstruction committed to ending slavery and renewing democracy’s commitment to equality. Many scholars suggest the United States may now be experiencing another period of significant political transformation. We’ll examine contemporary debates about democracy, including the influence of wealth in politics, campaign finance, lobbying, and the growing impact of technology, from artificial intelligence and social media to cryptocurrency, on governance, public policy, and civic life. Books to be discussed include Oligarchy by Jeffrey Winters and Fight Oligarchy by Bernie Sanders.
