Course Overview

The Curanderismo Hispanic Concepts of Traditional Healing certificate consist of three courses suited for health professionals, social workers, students and the general community who are interested in pursuing learning with a special focus in culturally competent and community defined ancestral concepts of healing in the Hispanic world. The certificate explores how our Mexican/Chicano/Hispanic/Latino ancestors have used traditional healing concepts and methods in the United States and Mexico to help diminish minor ailments of the mind, body and spirit. The certificate is intended for individuals seeking to enhance their knowledge and understanding of how our ancestors shaped our cultural diversity in yesteryears and today, the integration of traditional and allopathic medicine and what the future of this medicine might be in sociocultural terms.

What You'll Learn

• Explain the history, traditions, and roots of Curanderismo emphasizing its African influences and historic struggles to be recognized by institutions in Latin America and in Africa.
• Synthesize the rituals and uses of medicinal herbs from Puerto Rico, Cuba and Peru and appraise the similarities and differences in the belief system and energetic cleansings performed in each of the three healing traditions.
• Describe the techniques employed by curandero/as in the Mayan culture for the traditional healing of the physical body comprising the skeletal and muscular systems as well as the ancient practice of Mayan acupuncture.
• Recognize the benefits of hydrotherapy using pressure and temperature to heal with water.
• Analyze the different techniques used in Curanderismo to treat vulnerable populations: the elderly, infants, and pregnant women emphasizing physical treatments to adjust the spine and correct the baby’s position in the womb.
• Appraise the Mexican tradition of Day of the Dead and its effects in honoring and healing grief caused by the passing of loved ones.
