Course Overview
The Curanderismo Hispanic Concepts of Traditional Healing certificate consist of three courses suited for health professionals, social workers, students and the general community who are interested in pursuing learning with a special focus in culturally competent and community defined ancestral concepts of healing in the Hispanic world. The certificate explores how our Mexican/Chicano/Hispanic/Latino ancestors have used traditional healing concepts and methods in the United States and Mexico to help diminish minor ailments of the mind, body and spirit. The certificate is intended for individuals seeking to enhance their knowledge and understanding of how our ancestors shaped our cultural diversity in yesteryears and today, the integration of traditional and allopathic medicine and what the future of this medicine might be in sociocultural terms.What You'll Learn
• Describe the history and basic concepts of Curanderismo traditional medicine as well as the common tools and techniques used in this healing tradition and how it is still practiced today.• Appraise the positive effects of using nature’s elements for healing including the use of oils, herbal smoke, herbal tinctures & microdoses.
• Recognize the benefits for emotional health through the Temazcal Mexican sweat lodge ceremony.
• Identify different traditional hands-on techniques and their impact on bodies ailments such as intestinal blockage empacho, shawl alignments manteadas, and fire cupping ventosas.
• Explain the use of plants for the healing of the body systems and their use in healing the energy/spirit.
• Describe the benefits of laugh therapy, sound, and music in emotional and energetic healing and how they can transform a person’s life.
• Identify the common medicinal herbs of the Rio Grande Valley and healing rituals in New Mexico.
• Recognize the contributions of three famous Mexican healers in the 1800 and 1900’s and their impact in Mexico and the United States.
