Course Overview

Writing short stories is a great way to hone your story-telling and fiction-writing skills. Short stories have their tricks, twists, and clever endings. We all have deep stories to tell. Getting those stories into a form that brings out their true power requires practice and knowledge about what works in a short format. In this class, we’ll read short stories, we’ll read articles about story-telling skills, and we’ll look at work from students. We’ll also look at the publishing market for short stories.

Rob Spiegel is a career writer who published his first short story in 1975. He works as a senior editor at Design News, and he continues to write and publish short stories. He has been teaching writing at UNM, CNM, Osher, and at writing conferences around the country for 25 years.

"It was a fantastic experience. Rob is a great teacher! Very supportive and encouraging. He offers very helpful tips and insights. Great class!"
