Course Overview

In 1961-1968, people in the south came together and brought about change that moved this country closer to its fundamental promise. Why and how was this change accomplished? The teacher, Jim Lewis, was inside the civil rights movement, as a civil rights worker in Mississippi (1965-1966) and a civil rights and poverty rights lawyer there (1966-1973). We’ll examine political, economic, social and educational advantage and disadvantage during segregation, and the change that came during 1961-1968, with a goal of understanding why this happened and what people can do to define and bring about change.
